It was our best so far imo. The most in synch overall. The most complementary offensive and defensive game plan. And outstanding results.
The defense held Ole Miss to its lowest points of the season. The defense also stopped Heisman Candidate Corral’s consecutive game streak with a TD pass. And a key interception was only his 2nd of the season.
The defense got pressure and hits on Corral, influencing him to pass more than run, possibly pressing on his red zone interception. And Kiffin pressed as well, choosing to give up a possible 9 points on red zone opportunities, resulting in turnover on downs 3 times in 4 attempts. Way below their 78% season results. AU is not a team to be tested on 4th down.
The offense contributed by getting off to a fast start, building a lead, and forcing Ole Miss to try to catch up out of desperation. AU switched to a running team, calling runs at a 2:1 ratio. The use of misdirection, perimeter runs, pin and pull blocks, QB designed runs, and 12 and 13 TE sets all came together to put points on the board, and win TOP as well.
The passing attack was mostly short timing routes, with some play action mixed in. Only about half of the receptions were by WR’s, with the TE’s and RB’s contributing the other half. Several quick safe passes to the flats to supplement the run game.
Coming off the bye week, AU played a calculated physical game at JHS against a season-weary OM team without nearly the depth to match. It was the right approach by AU.
Each week the team has improved, and more importantly put together a team effort both offensively and defensively to synch up efforts.
Synching up the offense to personnel by Bobo since LSU. Synching up Bobo to Harsin cannot be overlooked either. Synching the offense to defense has been evident as well. Longer drives, defensive scores, 4th down stops, and turnovers all big in AU’s last two games.
Now AU has an opportunity to finish strong in its last 1/3 of the season. A chance to build on what it has already achieved. A chance to keep on improving, gaining momentum, playing for bigger stakes, and winning.
