LSU's Brian Kelly is the first coach to speak at SEC Media Days. Kelly is entering his third season at LSU. Here's a summary...
** Still exciting going into his 33rd year of being a head coach. Welcomes UT and OKL to SEC but doesn't offer a Horns Down, which was disappointing.
** Tiger Stadium has been refurbished ... with updates to sound system, lights, etc., acc'd to Google.
** He mentions the three players he brought are good players and good young men. Shocking, I know.
** The 2024 LSU team has been built on trust. Need to be more balanced and play better on defense.
** Will be tested in opener against USC in Las Vegas.
** One of the most robotic opening statements I've seen. Questions are up next.
** There's 6-8 WR's that will have an opportunity to contribute and make an impact. Says they have speed on the perimeter and can has great depth in the slot.
** Being the No. 1 offense in country wasn't good enough. Need to compliment that on defense and special teams.
** DL coach Bo Davis was brought in to rebuild tradition of great LSU DL's. He wants to bring that back. He can motivate and teach. Demanding but never demeaning. He's won championships in the SEC.
** The transfer portal can't be strictly need based. If you're just filling needs, you haven't done something right in recruiting. You should use the portal to top off the tank. Said LSU was too need based last year.
** Kelly is told he has a question to the right. Looks left first but finally finds him. He asks Kelly about Texas, who LSU doesn't play. Why??? Don't be that guy.
** LB Harold Perkins was able to impact team as a freshman even though he wasn't fully developed yet. He's an every-down LB now.
** Jayden Daniels was great at watching things in meetings and bringing it onto the field. Garrett Nussmeier has been able to do that as well, but he has to prove he can do it in games. He believes Garrett will be able to do that.
** DC Blake Baker has brought the defensive player together, built strong relationships.
** Kelly says he doesn't deal in expectations. He deals in the day-to-day process. Our mission is to win championships. This is the most accountable this team has been in year three. This is the deepest team we've had. Can't control expectations but has had pretty good success in year threes.
** We got a question from UK journalist on playing in Ireland. Kelly says he's an Irish Catholic and loves to go to Ireland. Kelly says next step for LSU brand is international. Great venues to play in Ireland. Travel is easy. Huge proponent and making case as future Ireland ambassador.
** Perkins is over 220 pounds now and better able to handle playing inside and outside.
** Legend Bob Holt gets last question, about Nussmeier. Talks about how positive it was for him tio stay at LSU and continue to develop until his time comes.
*****THAT'S ALL*****
