Sometimes you can't put too much into scrimmages. Good coaches like to have a greater collection of data to determine who they can or can't trust. Do scrimmages help with that sure. However, a lot of times different players are put in different situations to see how they respond or what they can or can't bring to the table. So all of my views can be taken fwiw. I'm not in the meetings or other practices to know 100% everything going on.
QB.
Finley by far looked the best. If I had to base it off what I saw at 1 scrimmage. The Battle for #2 at QB is closer than the Battle for the starting job.
Calzada actually ran with the 3s the first time. He had his shirt rolled up so I thought it was #18. It was with the 3s but him throwing the ball looked rough.... very rough. No way I see him being starter.
Finley looked most comfortable by far. He made some nice reads and nice clutch throws on 3rd & 4th Downs. He went through progressions and took his check Downs. Sometimes even when you want to see him take a shot (ex 3rd & 12 he's throwing 2 yard route to tank). With saying that he did also show some of the quick trigger forcing the ball into coverage or tiny windows when he got pressure on him.
Robby is an athlete, big arm, players like him ,& he is high energy. I think he would benefit with more designed runs, rpo, and not so much a traditional offense.
RB
Tank had some good runs early. I think he still tries to do too much. He has some Bo Nix in him. Tries to hit a homerun too much instead of getting 2 yards. Hunter was used very limited.... wouldn't look too much into that. Alston looked great. I think he will be #3. Ingram didn't look bad at all playing with 3s but he's developmental guy.
Te
We use a lot of bodies here according to personnel. Deal or Frazier are more run guys. Fromm & JSS are more versatile weapons. Solid group
OL
Tackles are locked at starters. Lots of good competition for inside positions.
Keiondre Jones is built like a tank. He is a road grader. Jackson, Stutts, Council, Tate, brahms. We should be able to find 3 guys. Back up tackles.....yikes. Coffey still not where you need him. Colby & Langlo will be alright but need another year to develop. Need to stay healthy at Tackle. We have decent depth inside.
WR
We have some guys that can make plays. Jav Johnson & Dawson are little jitterbugs. Very elusive. Shed & MJJ are both doing good, leaders and consist. Brown will play a good bit. He is probably the most impressive looking Wr we have. Koy is still struggling with being more consistent than MJJ, but he will still get his chances. Fair got in some in 10 personnel and empty. Only other who might play is king but it'll just be situational. He's still learning the transition.
DL
Lots of big bodies. By far are best & deepest position. Wooden, Hall, leota are dogs. Harris is very very underrated. Bragg & Morris are actually giving some good snaps which kind of surprised me. Mba is very big but still raw... needs to develop some more. Jones was a really good pick up as well. Burks, Walker & Mba will all rotate. Leota was everywhere last night. Really excited about him. Brooks is still very skinny. Looks like a basketball player.
LB
Owen looked great. He was at Mike and covering ground like the freak he is. We really need him to stay healthy because we will miss zakoby. Steiner made some good plays with the 2s. Riley is a big boy. Looks like an edge playing in the box. Good scrimmage for him. Levant got most of the reps at 2nd will. Tisdol & brown rotated some as well. Don't remember Asante playing... he could have but I just didn't see him. Not much quality depth.
DB
Starting group is good. I was surprised how well Bridges looked. Scott worked with 1st group as well, when that happened Kaufman went back to safety and they took Bridges out. That will probably be the norm once Scott gets more comfortable and familiar. Scott will play a lot. He was also one of the top 2 punt returners yesterday.
Overall TJ is the guy imo. We will run the ball, lean on great kicker, and be REALLY good defense.
Hopefully it's a good year. I'd say anywhere from 6-6 to 8-4 depending how QB progress and how healthy we stay. Defense should keep you in most games
