Moving on to the other side of the ball, a lot of buzz surrounding Durkin's defense has been coming out of fall camp, and for good reason. Durkin runs a base multiple 4-3 scheme that has gradually taken on the form of 4-2-5 as nickel has become the de facto base formation and personnel grouping to defend against contemporary passing attacks. His defense is relatively simple in playcalling and personnel packages but is window dressed with tweaks to down linemen, the buck position, and disguised coverages. This allows the defense to play fast and create chaos, and Durkin will blitz early in often from several different directions. Elite corner play and discipline from the safeties will be essential as Durkin will primarily call man coverage, but zone looks are available and will be called depending on the situation. As with all defenses as aggressive as Durkin's, there will always be a vulnerability to big plays and corners will frequently find themselves on an island but with an effective pass rush and good-to-great linebacker play it can create turnovers and be suffocating for an offense.
