AUr running backs are not even close to bad. They are inexperienced. Starting against a Washington squad that fielded a pretty salty defense coached by a well-known and respected coach isn’t an easy task. Couple that with a fresh OL going against a future top draft pick in Gaines and you’re going to have a difficult time getting going. Hats off to him, btw. Big boy could move! I know Stidham isn’t a blazer, but Gaines hawked him down from the far hash to the sideline and put all 320 onto him. That was impressive.
I think Martin will or should have a role going forward, but it should look like last year. Boobee needs more carries. I’d like to see him with some CAP/Tre Mason/Kerryon series. Where those guys really gashed defenses was when playcalling got us into 2nd and < 6. AU would run hurry up with creative playcalling and lean on opposing DL. I want to see Whitlow playing against a D that isn’t filling the gaps from exhaustion. I think he is a guy that can run any gap and on the outside. Shivers should get a few carries, and I have to admit him manning up on that safety was telling of his mentality. They both got stood up, but SS is like 124 lbs. He is incredibly quick though and I’d like to see him used on the edges.
I suspect the OL will grow up and the RB situation will become clear as we move forward. I saw a lot of good in the game Saturday and a lot we can work on. I’m thankful we can analyze a win , however, and that game will prove useful to us down the road. My money is on Whitlow taking over by LSU.
