Auburn's 2024 recruiting will take a step forward this weekend with the arrival of several players near or at the top of the Tigers' board.
Let's take a gander:
THE OFFICIAL VISITORS
Pettiford has been on assistant coach Ira Bowman's radar for a few years already — largely because he's obscenely quick, cunning in transition and has better-than-average range from a shooting perspective. He may be the best athlete in this class ... and he has skills, too. Rivals recently moved Pettiford into the Top 30 after a terrific summer campaign. Kentucky, Tennessee, UConn and LSU appear to be the most significant challengers, though the finish line remains well into the distance.
Marshall is a massive human being who made his first visit to Auburn during the program's Team Camp last summer. He's listed at 305 pounds currently (at 6-foot-10), though he doesn't look portly on the floor. With that said, Marshall lost 50 pounds to get where he is today. At this stage, he's good simply because he's so much bigger than everyone charged with defending him. Marshall has quick-ish feet, which help him get into position reasonably well on the defensive end. The issue here, and this is just me talking, is that Pearl always favors quick-hop bigs. I'm talking about guys like Anfernee McLemore, Horace Spencer, JT Thor, Walker Kessler. Peyton Marshall is not a quick-hop big. We'll watch how Marshall's body continues to change and maybe re-assess things down the road a bit.
Bailey, who goes by "Ace," is part of the next generation of stars at McEachern outside of Atlanta. Bailey is one of those quick-hop bigs I mentioned earlier. He's electric in transition, rebounds very well for his size and has the ability to defend several different positions. He's more of a scorer than a shooter at this stage, but he can really score. Tennessee, Indiana, Cincinnati have made him a priority — just as Auburn has.
OTHER NEWS OF NOTE:
• One of Auburn's top remaining '23 targets, SG Wesley Yates, visited LSU last weekend. This still is expected to come down to Auburn and Texas. I'm actually leaning toward the Tigers right now.
• Auburn has been keeping close tabs on '24 SG Karter Knox, who plays at Tampa (Fla.) Catholic. Knox, the younger brother of former Kentucky forward Kevin Knox, is a plus defender who handles the ball well for a small forward. The Wildcats obviously will be a factor here.
• The Tigers have been talking with '24 PF Jayden Williams of Snellville, Ga., in an effort to coax an unofficial visit. It's unclear when he'll visit, but the Tigers feel Williams will make the trip before long.
• Class of 2025 center JD Palm, formerly of Dothan (Ala.) High, has transferred to McEachern. Auburn is very interested.
• A few other players the Tigers consistently have been keeping up with include:
