I keep seeing people saying that we haven't recruited this position well. QB recruiting is different than every other position, yet the bunker seems to judge it the same. Rarely do teams have a bunch of highly touted QB on the roster regardless of their success, tradition, reputation, style, or their coaches. Unlike every other position, only one QB plays per year, essentially. They don't play another position until someone graduates and they don't play ST's except for holding on kicks. And for highly touted QB's that want to go pro and need the experience that NFL teams require in order to draft them, the team's depth chart is far more important than at other positions. So it's naive to assign blame to coaches' recruiting ability and effort for "missing" on the top QB's on their board especially following years where we've landed a guy like JJ. Guys like Shea Patterson go to places like Ole Miss where they are guaranteed a starting spot as soon as they're ready. Schools like that can also sell that they will form the entire team around the QB, which would be foolish for us to do.
Good coaches can recruit the QB's whose talent isn't widely recognized and get guys that will fit the offense instead of change it as well as land a big fish from time to time. They have to be able to adapt and win without 5stars though. This is where CRL and Gus have really proven to be great because thanks to getting and winning with Cam and Nick, they now will be able to get most any JC or transfer that they think will make us better than what we have. Combine that with how well we recruit every other position on offense and we now have a recipe for perennial greatness on offense and production from the QB position. Any obvious deficiency at the position that arises while CGM is here will likely not last more than a year. I don't know if we can ask for much more than that.
