"LETS GOO" - Chris Moore at the beginning of practice... also me writing this. Auburn got rolling again with practice today and it was a long one — grab some popcorn or something.
-Started practice with some of the usual passing drills. "Make him a great shooter" was the emphasis — meaning, they wanted every pass in the players' breadbasket for easier shots.
-In drills at least, Dylan Cardwell continues to improve as a 3-point shooter. I wouldn't be surprised to see him shoot 15-20 of them this year
-In drills still, K.D. Johnson and Zep Jasper are a TOUGH, BRUTAL defensive combo. Any backcourt facing those two at the same time will not have fun.
-Along those same lines, I'd say Zep is certainly a lot louder than Wendell, especially on defense. Zep arrived late in the summer so I didn't get a full look at him, but now I've got a better feel for the PG situation.
-Moving onto the scrimmage. The usual: 3 games, scoring by 1s and 2s. First to 6. If a shooting foul occurs a player gets a FT for 1 point.
-Chris Moore did not participate in the scrimmage due to what looked like a calf issue. He worked in drills and looked okay, nothing serious, but was held out of the scrimmage.
-Team NAVY: Wendell Green, Lior Berman, Al Flanigan, Jabari Smith, Walker Kessler
-Team ORANGE: Zep Jasper, K.D. Johnson, Devan Cambridge, Jaylin Williams, Dylan Cardwell/Stretch Akingbola
-GAME ONE:
-Jabari starts off getting a steal then getting fouled and hitting a FT (NAVY leads 1-0)
-Walker hits a 3 (NAVY 3-0)
-Lior hits a little baseline floater (NAVY 4-0)
-Jabari with a nice post move over J-Will (NAVY 5-0)
-Walker has a massive block which leads to a fastbreak, Jabari scores (NAVY WINS 6-0)..... It was incredibly quick.
GAME TWO
-Al gets a steal down low leading to a Lior layup (NAVY 1-0)
-Stretch gets a dunk on a good pass from Zep (1-1)
-KD fouled and hits his FT (ORANGE 2-1)
-Devan with a steal and dunk (ORANGE 3-1)
-Walker has his 2nd big block of the day. This time on Dylan. It went flying back out to halfcourt...
-Jabari works inside on J-Will again to score (ORANGE 3-2)
-Dylan with a slam (ORANGE 4-2)
-Wendell scores on a nice backdoor cut — one of the few Zep lapses on defense (ORANGE 4-3)
-Al with another steal and score (4-4)
-K.D. (the master of psychology as @Jay G. Tate calls him) hits a corner 3 to win and lets everyone know about it (ORANGE WINS)
-Before K.D. hit that 3, Walker had a defensive lapse to let Dylan dunk and then air-balled a 3 to win it. He's not happy. "My fault y'all, that's pitiful."
GAME THREE
-Walker hits a quick bucket to start. You can easily tell he wants to make up for the end of game two (NAVY 1-0)
-Al has an incredible pass inside to Jabari but he can't finish it. Al crashes the board and does it himself (NAVY 2-0)
-Walker with a dunk (NAVY 3-0)
-Devan gets orange on the board with a backdoor cut leading to an alley-oop (NAVY 3-1)
-K.D. goes coast-to-coast for a layup (NAVY 3-2)
-Zep hits a 3 over Jabari (ORANGE 4-3)
-Jabari goes over J-Will AGAIN (4-4)
-Al YAMS a dunk over Devan (NAVY 5-4)
-Jabari hits a FT to win it (NAVY WINS)
Other notes:
-Coaches want to limit the turnovers but also focus on defensively working to force them... "That's Auburn basketball, forcing turnovers."
-Not upset about it, especially after a break, but want to get the players in better shape
-"Move onto the next play." – Coaches don't want to hear the players complaining about foul/no-call. Just move on, don't get a tech and focus on what's up next.
