We're speaking to several players today following the Hugh Freeze interview...
EUGENE ASANTE
** Fall camp went really well. Showed coaches what I can do. Was good for whole defense. Built a lot of chemistry.
** You can feel it walking around campus that the game week is here. Students are excited, players are excited to go out there and show what they can do.
** Have built body up over offseason. Credits Coach Dom and staff. Said he's built it up beyond what he thought possible.
** Going through different coaches can be difficult. Coach Freeze and his staff came in and appealed to our hearts. Appreciate that and can play the game harder knowing Coach Freeze has his back.
** Last year, I was very upset with myself for not getting on field. Made a vow myself and family that I was going to work as hard as I've even worked so I can't be denied. Grateful to God that I didn't give up on myself.
** Asante said he doesn't know where, "Let's work," came from. It just happened one day. He was a really quiet guy when he came in.
** The biggest thing with UMass' running QB is gap integrity. Watches their whole game against NMSU last weekend.
** Coach Roberts philosophy and approach to the game is proven and fundamentally sound. It's an aggressive style. We're trying to cause havoc on the other side of the ball. It's a fun defense to play.
** Griffin Speaks is my guy from Baylor. He's a field general at safety. He commands the defense when he's out there. Totally different when he's out there. What he says goes when it comes to coverages.
LUKE DEAL
** Excited to be done with the fall camp grind and be able to compete against other teams.
** Payton Thorne has a lot of confidence and is able to bounce back after a bad play. You need a QB with a little swagger. We got a room with plenty of that.
** This year's team has grown really close even with all the new players. We've gotten to know each other deeper than just the name on the jersey.
** Deal thinks the running game is really good. Entire RB room is really, really good. Excited to see how that works out against another defense.
** Excited to be on field in first game, a lot of buzz, new era of Auburn football.
** UMass plays with really good effort. Try to create chaos for OL and in their coverages. Bring a bunch of different looks. We'll be ready.
** Omari Kelly is a playmaker. His speed stands out. Remember seeing him run down on kickoff for first time. Always has energy, brings up morale of team. He's one of the guys that snaps us out if it when things are flat on offense.
KAM STUTTS
** On UMass' defense: "They do a really good job on defense. I'm looking forward to getting into the film on that."
** On Payton Thorne: "He's done a really good job stepping up as a leader. He's one of those voices in our head when it's a 130 degree heat index pushing us and keeping us going hard."
** On this run game: "Those dudes on defense have been really battling it out. Running the ball always has been the staple (at AU). I think we'll be good at that."
** On Two Tall Miller: "He's getting a lot better with his technique and stuff. He's fast; he can run really fast. I have to be on my horse when he's behind me (on a GT pull)."
** On finally getting into the spotlight: "It's been a long time coming."
