Play design/route running

On some of the play calls the running back runs and sits in the lane of either an outside curl or a short slant. Defenders cover multiple jerseys or prevent an open receiver by sitting in the throwing lane. I understand the need for RB to pick up a block or assist and then roll to a spot, but why tf would that spot be designed to be in the throwing lane of a route? Is this due to shit play designs or are our running backs lazy and/or trash route runners? Or do they just not understand the field?
