I heard this old Toto song last night and can't shake the earworm. Jeff Porcaro's drumming is what makes the song and propels its groove. Deceptively simple, he is in a tiny pocket on the edge of the beat. The texture from the additional percussion is essential, too.
That said, Lukather turned the song into a guitar showpiece in live versions. Dig his solo (starts about the 2:40 mark) from a show sometime in the last 15 years or so.
His current chops? Here he is at a Jeff Beck memorial in September 2024. I wish the quality were better -- shooting the stage instead of the big screen -- but the musicianship comes through loud and clear.
