My wife's grandfather (who was basically her second father) passed away yesterday from a combination of PD and dementia after around of year of being in memory care/hospice. Very thankful it wasn't drawn out as long as I've seen with other people, but it was just unspeakably brutal to not only watch a once proud and active business/community leader and family man just basically wither away before our eyes, but also watch my wife and her family suffer throughout the process of watching somebody she shared such a special and close relationship with go through what he did. Grateful for the man he was and the relationship we were able to build in eight or so years I knew him but wish we could've spent more time getting to know each other. If you have the money to spare and are looking to give, please do so to an organization that helps with PD and/or dementia research and treatments or that supports the families of individuals suffering from the aforementioned illnesses. Wouldn't wish what I witnessed him and our family go through upon anyone and hopefully we can one day find a way to cure or at the very least the ability to mitigate the effects of these diseases.
Also, not trying to evangelize or proselytize but I am immensely grateful for our faith and how important it is to everyone in the family. The peace that knowing with certainty my wife's grandfather entered heaven with a body and mind free of ailments and into a state of peace and joy is truly a blessing. I cannot imagine trying to navigate something like this without the strength and peace a relationship with Christ provides. I've experienced far more heartbreak and tragedy in my 26 years than most experience in a lifetime, but I have continued to not only survive but also thrive and I attribute all of success almost exclusively to my faith and convictions.
