lets have one.
This is a complicated issue for sure. One way of looking at this is that the right to bear arms is unconditional and every American who wants to own a gun can do so including an assault rifle. I assume the rationale is that if your country is under fire by a foreign enemy you can defend the nation and the Constitution.
Another way of looking at this is that the right to own guns comes from the belief that a well-armed society can prevent an armed "coup" attempt from an enemy from within the country.
The first rationale has a major flaw in the fact that any foreign power attempting to invade our nation would have such a force composed of major weapons that would render assault rifles and handguns ineffective against such an attack anyway. The second rationale is that rifles and handguns would stem an attack from within even if the assault came from our own military which once again, would have us beat on firepower.
Finally, is all of this wrong? Did our founding fathers intend for citizens to be armed due to the threat from outside sources following the defeat of England? Were they just gunshy after that event and overly cautious?
Furthermore, did our founding fathers intend for these gun rights to continue to extend to individuals once we had a modern, powerful army as well as a National Guard that would replace the old Militias? I honestly believe that this was the case and it has been stated many times that the Consitution is a work in progress and must be amended as situations change throughout history. i'm a licensed gun owner with many guns and I love my guns and enjoy shooting them including an AR-15 but I would gladly give up some or all of my guns if it would save a bunch of innocent school children from being slaughtered again by some gun nut who fell through the cracks.
Personally, I would support very strict background checks on an annual basis due to changing situations in our lives with an emphasis on mental health. This would require that any gun owner give his or her permission to have their mental health examinations made available to the people checking their background reports. If he or she fails then they would be denied permission to own a firearm for a year to be reviewed again in a year. Secondly, I would up the age at which kids are allowed to legally own a firearm to at least 21. Thirdly, I would ban all assault rifles. Nobody I know really needs that kind of firepower to hunt so why do they need them? Fourth, I would have a national 'turn firearms in" campaign where the government buys back firearms from people who no longer need them. We are always talking on here about having a civil discussion about gun control so let's have one.. Different opinions are what made America great. Last, I would never allow a proven felon to own a firearm again and have stiff penalties for those who violate this law. I believe that these measures are within reason and would have some impact on the mass murders that we have that are destroying our nation. We also need a tremendous effort to combat drugs and gangs as well. These two things are also making us a third-world country rapidly. If our two political parties would stop playing politics and come to the table for an effort to pass an immigration reform bill, it would have a great impact on gangs, crime, and a strain on our health care system, education system, welfare system, etc. BTW, I believe that we should never have to push One on our phone keypad for English. Instead, I think that One should be pushed for Spanish or any other foreign language. OK, I'm through so have fun.
