Meeting with Kiesau and Schmedding in the athletics complex. Refresh for updates...
-Kiesau up first:
-Think's there's going to be a lot of similarities in the offense. The foundation will be setting up the run game with the talented backs Auburn has
-Auburn will run more 2-3 WR sets this spring because of how few WRs actually are on campus
-Kiesau on the WRs "The kids we do have here have some talent and they're very different in their own way, it's very impressive."
-Wants to develop Landen King as both a TE and WR, but sees his future as more of a WR
-Calls Shedrick Jackson the "glue" of the WR room
-Excited to get Ja'Varrius Johnson back and sees a lot of explosiveness in his game that he can expand on this year
-QBs evaluated on everything they're doing. Not just team sessions. It's 1-on-1, 7-on-7, team drills, everything. No set timeline for a decision
-Says it was an easy transition going from WR coach to OC because of his familiarity with Harsin
-Says Tar'Varish Dawson made the biggest jump and looks a lot better this spring
-Keyz says he's talked a lot with Tank about how much he's expecting out of him, along with talks about the whole offense about how much they expect out of Tank
-Zach Calzada has a "quiet confidence" to him. Doesn't say a lot, but when he does it's extremely intelligent and worth listening to. Very thorough and very thoughtful.
-The super-deep TE room is viewed as a big asset from Kiesau as being able to help the run game and supplement the thin WR room, especially this spring
-Kiesau talked about how much he believes in Harsin. He was willing to go from being one of the top guys as an OC at Boise then being one of the bottom level guys as an analyst when he started at Auburn just because he believed in Harsin
-Says it was "awesome" every time one of the OL decided to return and made his life a lot easier. Will Friend played a big role in convincing them to come back.
-Kiesau on the culture of being around Bryan Harsin: "You want to be a part of that."
***SCHMEDDING NOW***
-We're not waiting around to solve the depth issues at EDGE. In recruiting and transfer portal being active. Also trying to scheme and make sure Derick Hall and Eku Leota don't get burnt out.
-You see a "continued trend" with Cam Riley and gaining weight and gaining experience playing in the box in a good way. Says there was a "hunger" after the season to want to play more and his actions backed it up in the weight room and in the first practice this spring
-Have to be versatile on defense. Play even and odd fronts, can't become predictable.
-Schmedding on his defensive philosophy: "Want to be relentless. Want to show up in your dreams a little bit."
-Replacing Roger McCreary started as soon as the season ended. Guys are competing and soon you should start to see who rises to the occasion.
-Says Caleb Wooden is a huge energy guy and is trying to learn stuff as quickly as possible. Big vibes guy and always brings the "juice."
-Donovan Kaufman started out at nickel now it's being rotated a little bit between different safeties and corners.
-Schmedding says Zeke Walker has had a great offseason
-Schmedding on Jeffrey M'ba: "He's not practicing right now, but I'm excited for when he does, I'll put it that way."
-In the long-run it's for the best that Owen Pappoe is not practicing. Despite not practicing he's still acting as a leader and doing his best to improve
-They've made it very clear to guys like Wesley Steiner, Desmond Tisdol, Joko Willis and other LBs this is their chance to perform and step up to solidify a role in the rotation
-Schmedding: "It's been great to see the transition from year one to year two."
