I was a radar tech. But for some reason I was assigned as a helmsman during Sea and Anchor Detail. I steered the USS California through its journey through the Panama Canal when they changed homeport. I was also the primary helmsman during WestPac trials..
Saved a collision with a pier with my quick reflexes on one occasion. This is a nuclear Cruiser.
I have never steered another boat in my life.
