It was a good win for the Tigers because we won easily and were not very efficient on offense. That just shows how strong we are defensively. We have to get better on the offensive end from an efficiency standpoint and we will. If we look at positions, we got 17 points from the one, 14 points from the two, 11 points from the three, 13 points from the four, and 15 from the five counting Stretch's free throw. From a shooting standpoint, the one position was 5 for 18, two was 5 for 20, three was 3 for 10, four was 5 for 11, and five was 6 for 12. All of these numbers should get better as we improve. Getting double figures out of the three position was nice for a change.
Individually, KD was his maniac self on defense (and offense) and it was good to see him get those assists. He had a 3 to 2 assist to turnover ratio. What I would like to see is less gambling on defense. Sometimes he gets himself out of position going for a steal and that leads to open shots for the other team. When he's hot, he's hot but he just had a simmer on offense tonight. He can still go to the hole. As a team, we need to start hitting open three pointers. I don't know if our defensive intensity effects our offensive shooting but our guys shoot lights out in warm ups. Adrenaline is a bitch that needs to be controlled.
I was happy with Chris Moore's play. He hustles, can get dirty on the glass on both ends, and he hit is one three point attempt. He played 18 minutes and had 8 points, Flanny played 22 minutes and had 3 points. It's not all about scoring at the 3 position but is would sure help if we got more contribution from them this year. Flanny played good defense so he gets his props for that.
I was happy to see Zep be more aggressive. He couldn't get his shots to fall and was only 1 for 7 from the field, but I liked his aggressiveness. We get such good defense from the 2 position. We did have a few breakdowns on defense that Bruce will work out, but you can't leave shooters open for threes like we did.
I saw people praise Wen for his game but I didn't think his game was that good (knowing what he can do.) He had a couple of turnovers that came from a lack of concentration and he doesn't usually have those. He can shoot better than that too and he's a game changer when he's on. I always like players to have more steals than turnovers and that can be tough for guards. Wen had 3 turnovers and 1 steal. KD and Zep both had more steals than turnovers. A Wen-Westry duo at the one will be really good.
Broome is going to be a monster if we get him the ball. That baby hook is damn near impossible to stop and I see him getting double teamed a lot in SEC play. That means we have to hit the open threes so we've got a ways to go there.
All in all, a great first game and a lot of material for Bruce to work with.
