It’s taken a while to process what happened yesterday. But I feel like people should know what happened, and know how absolutely insane the world we live in today is.
Around 2pm I received this text from a friend. Someone had wrecked their car onto the golf course. Our head pro, being a decent human being went to help the stranded driver. 20 minutes later everyone on the range is scrambling for safety and Gene Sillers, our head pro, is dead. My father and I were supposed to play that day, but decided against it the night before. It could have been us on the green at #10, it could have been anyone. It doesn’t take anything to be killed anymore, and can happen even when you’re trying to help. Just like it did to Gene.
A gofundme has been created, and I know the USGA has gotten involved in trying to raise money for his poor wife and two young sons. I will try to find a link to it. It’s just so sad, I still don’t think I’ve come to terms with what happened yesterday. I feel empty, and I can only imagine how the assistant pros feel today. Two of whom have blamed themselves for not going with Gene to the 10th hole. But it’s no ones fault, except the shooter, an absolute insult to humanity. Hug your loved ones today.
