I’ve shared most of my thoughts on the game already, but here is a synopsis.
1. We have a poorly coached team, specifically on offense. I mean as bad as I have seen. We ask personnel to do things they can’t, we don’t use skills we do have, we don’t adjust to defenses, we don’t create mismatches. I mean it is a hot mess of garbage bad. Sure we have weak areas of talent, but we are coaching it into a worst case scenario.
2. I don’t think we did any pre-snap reads, changed plays at LOS, adjusted pass-pro based on defensive alignment. Instead we ran bad calls right into the defense with disastrous results. Really no excuse for those coaching fails against Diaz.
3. PSU adjusted, we didn’t. They used their weapons, we couldn’t. They stressed our week-spots and we just did nothing about it. The talent difference between AU and PSU was not that much, but the coaching difference was.
4. PSU successfully used the TE and HB stack to open up their run game after the first drive when we were stuffing them. They had to because their OL is just as weak as ours. Not sure why we didn’t do the same.
5. AU play design confused me all game. A reverse sweep to Jackson, and out pattern to Tank, only 1 max protect call all game, etc. These plays do not match our skill sets. Good coaches don’t make these calls, or even have them in playbook.
6. I find it odd that our offense devolved to QB scrambles for most of the game at some point. We literally could not block the Diaz pressures, resulting in free rushers at our QB. Some of best plays were from escaping a rush, but some of our turnovers were too. This is a coaching and scheme issue more than just poor talent or effort. Ironic that Bo Nix was at times under appreciated for his ability to extend plays.
7. I liked seeing Simpson lined up near LOS on wide edge. He was effective there in limited snaps.
8. I thought our DL (Hall, Wooden, Harris) and Pappoe started out strong in 1st drive. Once PSU deployed the TE-HB stack alignments, we struggled. Then they broke the back in 3rd Qtr. Seemed like all motivation to tackle hard was gone.
9. Worst AU coaching staff imo. Worse than Barfield. Similar to 1998 unraveling. We have 3-star talent, and 1-star coaching right now.
10. I’m really open to what some of the bunk X and O guys are seeing, but it seems clear to me. Clear to me what we must do as well.
