1. For those of you who wrote about this being a dry campus - My wife & I were in Lot 12 and many the tailgates had plenty of flowing booze. Walking around we were offered dozens of free beers.
2. We drove up to the game and spent the week in Western PA then over to State College on Friday staying in Altoona, 45 minutes to the South. We actually drove the entire way back to Auburn on Sunday (843 miles) which was more punishment than this 1970 grad wanted but we had grandkids off school in Atlanta and coming on Monday (today).
3. I wrote in a previous post about the recruiting at midfield that Franklin was doing - fist pumps, hugs, and an individual picture with each of over a hundred recruits. What a big deal for each kid with the White Out in the background.
4. The upper deck end zone seats and structure was actually moving like an earthquake when all our drunk fans were jumping up and down. We joined in the cheering but, my gosh, the thought of that thing coming down was a constant thought.
5. The stadium was no louder than any SEC major school. We've sat up high in Athens, Tuscalsoosa, Columbia, Baton Rouge and all of them are the same. Penn State has a huge group of cheerleaders - gals & guys plus a good halftime show. They did a lot of lighting of their phones while playing country music during time outs. I think this was the biggest crowd I've seen - 109,800 and I saw empty seats.
6. The fields you parked on were grass and all of it was beautiful. No bare spots, dark green, don't know how they keep it that way.
7. We spent Friday driving around the surrounding area. It is really beautiful there. The mountains are lower than ones in Georgia and Tennessee with most of the higher elevations being around 1550 feet. We drove through the really pretty Amish area in Big Valley not far from State College. Bought a bushel of fresh picked honey crisp apples for $20 ! I mean about a 150 of them for 20 bucks. The Amish fellow's name was Peachy and we found a lot of other folks with that name
8. Downtown State College had an Amazon store, quite a few stores and shops and was really nice. I can see why some one would love being in school and having graduated from there.
9. Heard a few "roll tides" yelled at us, some "go dawgs" and a couple young students with "F*** Auburn" written in magic marker on the front of their white shirts. No different than some of the SEC schools.
10. I was disappointed in some of our younger fans in our section. Listen, I'm no prude by any stretch but the yelling out of "run the F***ing ball," "F*** that call", etc had some of the other Auburn fans yelling at these fans to shut up! Didn't like that representation by these cussing fans.
11. Overall we really enjoyed our week there. We could have won. We need some better players. I really believe we have the right head coach for Auburn.
