Too Long - Don't Care...Loud Music, great city and my heavy metal heart is full
I cannot emphasize enough how well run and impressive this festival is...I have been to multiple Danny Wimmer Festivals over the years and this one is hands down the best.
Side by side main stages, side by side stages in the back of the grounds, a Bourbon tent with about 20 different distilleries making mixed drinks for the event, water stations everywhere and security handing out free waters to fans if you ask nicely. DWP does this one right, there is a reason it is the largest Rock and Metal festival in the country.
Highlights
Tool was unbelievable, the visuals for a One-Off Festival were shocking. I saw them last year at Bonnaroo and the difference in a year was impressive. If you are seeing them on this upcoming tour...I am really excited for you. If you have the chance to see it, please go.
Queens of the Stone Age are in a zone right now. Josh is in a great place and their performance shows it. He was dancing all over, interacting with the crowd and the set list was awesome. My goodness A Song for the Dead live is something else.
Pantera live again gave me goosebumps a few times...wish I could have seen them headline instead of just catching them at a festival (opening later this year)
Wage War - great live show
Run the Jewels - so much fun and Killer Mike is fun live
Corey Taylor - played Before I Forget, Through Glass, Snuff and closed with Ace of Spades
Megadeth - "This is a song about the weather," proceeds to play Tornado of Souls!!!!!
Parkway Drive - Drum kit spinning upside down, tons of pyro and energy
Sleep Token - sadly the back stages started 55 minutes late on the day so they played at 7:55 with Pantera playing at 8:00. I caught 5 minutes and I need to see it again.
Disappointments
Limp Bizkit - I actually like Limp Bizkit but they were either trolling the crowd, upset to not be headlining or maybe I have outgrown them. Opened with Korn's Blind and all the band members were on different instruments. It wasn't a serious attempt and it got worse from there, we walked away after 20 minutes.
Godsmack - they need to mix things up or move on. Can't do the same Drum Battle with Back in Black every show for 20 years, mix it up.
Avenged Sevenfold - this has nothing to do with the band, the intro and the songs I got to see uninterrupted were great. There were 4 different stoppages due to crowd injuries. The youngsters were just a little too out of control for this one. It ruined their set sadly.
Green Day - this was something I just wanted to see to be able to say I saw them but it was terrible. The set was scheduled for 8:55, they played intro music/junk for 12 minutes before they came on stage. Every other song was extended so Billie Joe could play with the crowd. Luckily it wasn't a band I loved because I was fine leaving halfway through.
If anyone ever has a question on how to pull this 4 day festival off just let me know, it is the best heavy music weekend in the country. Louisville is an awesome city and the amount of stuff to do while you are waiting for music feels overwhelming. This was my third year and we didn't repeat anything except Churchill Downs. Also it made the aTm game go down a little softer.
