Less government and more individual freedom is a noble dream, That ideal has been co opted by the christian right who wants to impose their religious beliefs on the rest of the nation. Most notably abortion and gay marriage. Throw pot in there for good measure. Those issues have become a litmus test that is limiting the party. Young people have moved on these issues no longer resonate. I am staunchly to the right on most fiscal and military issues as well as crime welfare and immigration. I don't care about who sleeps with whom and although I disagree with late term abortions I am ok with some abortions.
