In the late 20's and early 30's in Germany there was a battle between the liberals (communists/socialists) and the conservatives (nazis) for control of the government. The hateful rhetoric of the leader of the conservatives enraged his constituents. He gave a wink and a nod when their followers committed violent acts. They intimidated voters. The conservatives got the majority vote and eventually control of the government. The conservative populace was happy. When their leader won, they won! Once that happened, there was one man that was the ultimate power in the country, without question. The hateful rhetoric directed towards the "opponents" turned into action by not only his followers but the entire system, all the way to the top. The actions of the system got worse and worse until there was nothing left that was possible that could be worse.
The leader had a personality disorder which is now identified as malignant narcissism. He thought he was the smartest man in the world. He thought he had the vision to lead his country and knew what had to be done in spite of the fact that his people would have to make sacrifices in order to reach their ultimate destiny. He would disregard the advice of his underlings because he knew what was right. And lo and behold, he was!!
The economy boomed under his leadership. From what a few short years prior was an excruciating depression there now was the fastest growing economy in the countries history. The people were happy. Sure, they noticed that a certain sect in their communities had moved away but they didn't really associate with them anyhow. Look at all of the money they had now. No more going hungry! In addition to all the economic success, there was a renewed pride in their nation. Viva La Germany!!
The leader (the malignant narcissist) surrounded himself with nothing but yes men. "Who needs people around with opposing viewpoints when I have all of the answers already. Let's just get people in here that are going to get done what I need done!! By God have you not seen what I have accomplished with regards to national pride, the economy, and worldwide prestige?"
This leader had been a lowly painter. His father was not a man of wealth and influence. The only way that he was going to advance in the world was by his hard work and his will. No Oxford education and no large inheritance was forthcoming. This man recognized that fiery rhetoric got people excited and motivated. The more radical the language, the greater the visceral reaction from his listners. His opponents would mock his language and his appearance. news magazines in the united states would mock him in cartoons, Hollywood on film. He was like a cartoon character to many but his proponents could overlook his mannerisms because he was going to make Germany great. This man got to to their core emotionally. They were his and they were Germany! If anyone opposed him, they were those that were wrong. Sure, this guy might have taken a few shady paths along the way but it was in the best interest of the country that they loved.
Well, it turned out that he didn't know quite as much as he thought. He tried to run a war. When his generals gave tactical advice, he disregarded it and told them that they would implement his plan. He was the one that was always right. He was inches away from controlling his entire hemisphere and becoming the biggest player in the world.
and the malignant narcissist ultimately cost his country the war, and his people everything.
