Let me start this post by saying I'm not at all pleased by what I witnessed Saturday. It was borderline disgraceful.
However, there are a lot of folks on this board who have taken complete leave of their senses. Even though I realize I will get hammered for it, I want to try and put the situation in perspective.
When we hired Gus, we hired a coach with 1 year of college head coaching experience at a mid-major school. As I think everyone here will agree, the HC hat weighs a lot more than the OC hat, and the difference in responsibility and accountability is enormous.
I also think we should realize this is the 1st real adversity Gus has faced as a college HC. I'm sure he faced it at the HS level, but that's not really comparable.
I say these things because the "Fire Gus" crowd is way out of bounds at this point. I actually think the jury is still out on how good a coach he can be, and how he handles this situation in the long haul... Not this weekend, will go a long way to determining his ceiling as a coach. I know it sounds crazy, but he's still learning to coach at this level.
My message. As a fanbase, we need to support him and the team. That doesn't mean we can't complain, but this fire the coaching staff talk is ridiculous at this point.
