Good afternoon, everyone.
Some things are happening with regard to Auburn portal recruiting:
• Florida International G/F Denver Jones will be on campus this weekend for A-Day. His visit will begin Thursday and end Saturday. He appears to be the Tigers’ No. 1 overall portal target — with BP already having met with Jones in Miami and with Jones’ folks in Huntsville last week. Auburn’s plan for him is to be a featured catch-and-shoot guy who isn’t asked to do much dribbling in the half court. The Tigers think he can be the next Bryce Brown.
• Auburn tentatively has a visit set for Temple G Damian Dunn. He should be on campus next weekend. Auburn really likes the combination of skill, talent and personality with Dunn.
• Auburn has established contact with Baylor G LJ Cryer, who entered the portal Tuesday, but there is a snag. Cryer was a 6-foot-1 shooting guard for the Bears last season. However, Cryer wants to feature as a point guard at his next school. Auburn may be unwilling to accommodate that request.
• Auburn is doing its due diligence on Tennessee F Olivier Nkamhoua, who entered the portal last week. The 6-foot-9 senior was the Vols‘ best player last season and has the kind of shooting range that could affect the Tigers’ attack in a very positive way. Nkamhoua’s move into the portal is perplexing, however, and the Tigers are doing their due diligence regarding things off the court.
• Auburn would like to add a backup F, but any addition at that spot must be handled delicately. Jaylin Williams is planning to go through the NBA evaluation process. The Tigers don’t want to sign a transfer that would “scare” Williams away from the Plains. One player that could hit that sweet spot between current production and future projection is Marshall C Micah Handlogten. He stands 7-foot-1 and hit an incredible 71% from two-point range for the Herd last season. He’s by no means a finished product, but may be able to provide assistance at both power forward and center next season.
• Auburn remains in contact with Rice G Quincy Olivari and Washington State G TJ Bamba.
• Coach Steven Pearl is planning to visit Class of 2024 center prospect Flory Bidunga at an AAU tournament in Omaha, Neb., later this month. Bidunga, the No. 2 player in the class, made an official visit to Auburn last fall and remains high on the Tigers. The Pearls were in attendance at Bidunga’s state-title game last month and have been recruiting him intently for two full years.
