then look at it in context. Critical penalties on offense were the story yesterday, which was quite the shift from the boneheaded critical penalties on defense last year. Muschamp already has this D playing aggressive. I like it a lot. We got burned on occasion trying to get some young bucks PT, but that is inevitable. The DL is the truth. Between Lawrence, Lambert, Lawson, Russell, and Adams, we have a group that's starting for most schools in the country. Kennion had a huge play last night also but still is a WIP. I think our secondary play was fine and our LB's were not in a good schematic for success when streetball Jackson came in and buzzed and whirred for a 100 on the ground. It all starts up front, however, and we are very solid there.
On offense, three critical penalties occurred that negates either a TD or killed a drive. Obviously the hold on the TD pass was a killer. That's on the OL communicating with each other. That DT should've been covered up but the miscommunication forced the OG into desperation and it was called. JJ's sitting on 200 yards and is 2/2 sans that. The hold on Shon on the first down run inside the 20 also resulted in a field goal instead of 7. It was a petty call, but Shon's hands were outside and that'll get you called. Then there's Gus's unsportsmanlike. He's never done that, but after watching Louisville repeatedly be on the end of beneficial officiating, I'd have been mad too. It's crazy how UL's young offensive line didn't hold once. According to the refs anyway.
JJ will be fine. He made some poor throws yes. It was his first game as a man. I'm willing to withhold judgment until later down the road. I don't think Gus's playcalling was helpful to JJ. He needs more intermediate routes on the outside and slants. We did find out a lot about Barber. It wouldn't surprise me to see him get 25 a game. He's a workhorse and always seems to fall forward. He also has good vision and balance. Cox and Pettway played well and the OL was overall above average against likely the best front 7 they will see until UGA and bama. Our WR's weren't flashy, but Duke continued his clutch play and Jason Smith showed he can make the big catch too. I think Ric is gonna be huge for us this year also. We have a lot of talent to work with, just gotta get the ball to them.
Yesterday wasn't pretty, but we played like hell and still got the W. Time will tell if that hell is what our team really is, but I seriously doubt it. I believe we played well below this team's mean and still got the V. And we all know how important getting that is.
