*** Thanks to the staff and so many that contribute to the recruiting process. Not just the people in this building. Mentions the student body. The pilots that fly the coaches around. "It's a large, large, large task."
*** Goal was to have a top 10 class in first full year. Goal next year is to have a top 10 class.
*** Mentions had to close the gap on the elite schools. " We didn't win all of them, but we were sure in them."
*** "Excited about this class. We focused on the high school class. I mentioned that during the press conference the other day. Not sure if that is the right approach. But I wanted them to feel like they were the priority of a true rebuild at Auburn."
*** "I really believe the young men that we signed and the families they come from, I love these kids. I think they are genuine. They want to help establish this program as one of the elite in the country."
*** "There are schools in this conference that believe in last-night efforts. You have to fight and stay up all night, playing video games and doing things out of my comfort zone."
*** On offensive line recruiting in this class: "That was a position in the portal that we thought needed. Love what we see in Seth and Deiondre. Think Deiondre will be a NFL player. Still two out there that they are battling for."
*** "I think Walker White will be a star. Obviously you don't know how quickly he can be ready. And there was no secret we needed difference makers at wide receivers and to get two in the top 10 in the country. Now, they are going to get thrown into the deep end of the pool and swim pretty fast, but it changes our offense if we have guys like that on the outside and in the slot." Mentions his first full class at Ole Miss he got Laquon Treadwell to come and play of them.
*** Mentions that time he spent away from the offense and focused on recruiting paid off. Mentions that WR and linebacker class should be top 1 or 2 in the country.
*** He's now going through every signee after I asked about if him taking time away from offense paid dividends.
*** On wide receiver room including Robert Lewis and having different types of guys: "I like length and catch radius and I'm glad we added that. Still like young guys but can't have too many in this league.
*** Mentions Dorian Mausi has signed. We didn't know that yet.
*** Says he wants to win the state.
*** On what it took to overcome the early edge other schools had: "Time and effort. Getting them to campus as many times as you can. See if they can feel the different feel here compared to other places."
*** Hugh feels like they were wise about the targets that these kids will invest in the Auburn family, Auburn feel...
*** On Cam Coleman: "All of our staff put in great effort but Marcus Davis had to put in extra time because of the number of kids we were going after. When Coleman committed to another school, we never wavered. We want you more. We feel like he was a difference maker here. It helped that the other school had a coaching change."
*** On having flips and how exciting it is: "It's more of a relief. You are excited to watch it ... To get Amaris, that's pretty big. I think he's one heckuva athlete. My home visit with him and his mom was incredible. We were behind but Coach Garrett did a great job of staying in it. That's a difference maker type of kid."
*** On what was most effective in this cycle when recruiting: Well, he starts on a rant about NIL. "I would love to see people try to earn and strive to move their way up, but they don't ask me."
*** The pitch is that this place has played for two national titles in last 13 years. Only 5 or 6 schools can say that. You can go to one of them and help sustain or help return Auburn back to that place where they are competing for championships again."
*** "He's been so critical in help recruiting his team." -on Walker White. Said he took ownership of putting together a top 10 class. Mentions Keionte, Keys, others were closers.
*** Mentions that the players who arrive in January have a more likely chance of seeing playing time just from time with strength coach Dom, getting through spring practice, etc...
*** "We have to keep holding on. It's a reasonable expectation." - on having a top 5 class for 2025, which Auburn already has a top 5 class as of now.
*** On transfers: "Dorian is mature. Played a lot of football. Solid. Smart. He understands it all. Played in a similar system. Gives you a type of linebacker Auburn really doesn't have." Mentions chances of moving Cam Riley to JACK so he can rush the passer.
That is it for Hugh. Have a great Early Signing Day!
