Hugh Freeze is holding his regular Monday press conference today. Click refresh, will continue to update...

** Told team in "truth meeting" this morning that they getting off to a great start on special teams was really good, but didn't finish the same way we started. Had some loafs and missed tackles in 2nd half. Defense didn't have any penalties. Big glaring negative we got by with in this game but won't in other -- alignment and assignment. Had about 15 snaps we weren't aligned right on and that doesn't cut it. We'll hurt us if we don't get it fixed.

** Tempo on offense was good, no turnovers. Lot of good things. Biggest negative on offense was perimeter blocking and not understanding routes. Had three bad decisions at QB.

** Biggest thing is we're 1-0 with a lot of room to improve.

** Cal is talented and extremely scary on offense. Their tailback is one of the best he's seen. Well coached, fundamentally sound. They have depth. It will be a great challenge for us.

** Freeze said he doesn't like scheduling teams on West coast so he's making it his challenge to embrace it. His farthest trip was to BYU. Long trip will be a challenge to us all.

** If we continue to go fast on offense. we're comfortable using 8-9 offensive linemen in a game. Got to keep them fresh. The reason we did it this week was all the chaotic looks and we felt like Gunner Britton is smart and has a sharp eye. Like to have Gunner on one side and Kam on the other.

** The WR's made some plays. Stopped throwing downfield in 3rd quarter. Still don't totally understand spacing, landmarks and energy routes need to be run, especially when you're not getting the ball.

** Good to see Malcolm Johnson out there. He's one of fastest players on team. Can give us another deep threat if he can stay healthy.

** No comment on Jarquez Hunter eligibility for this week. Also says there's a long list of players banged up going into the week like Mardner, Pritchett, Keys.

** Zero pre-snap penalties was a big plus. Compliments assistant coaches on that.

** Robby didn't have to make many decisions as far as a grade but boy is he talented and important to our success. Payton had three decisions that were wrong but he played solid. Those run/pass decisions need to be 100 percent.

** Freeze said he's got to improve how he coaches Thorne. Says he thinks Thorne presses when he gets onto him.

** Can't be predictable and also use Robby just in the red zone. Got to mix it up and have different things for different game plans.

** Hard to change schedule too much to prepare for a late kickoff at Cal. Plan to get to Cal late Thursday night so they can go straight to bed. Gonna practice at a JUCO out there Friday.

** Both Eugene Asante on punt return and Caleb Burton on Sean Jackson's TD run did a good job of making shield blocks and not getting 15-yard penalties on blindside blocks.

** Didn't show a whole lot in passing game against UMass.

** Defensive front needs to get off blocks better. They played hard. Alignment was not on them. Got to play with our hands and rip off blocks.

** Some of best teaching moments come after a win because you can be hard on coaches and players. Coaches' meeting was rough, not demeaning, but rough. You can't line up wrong 15 times.

** Cal RB Jaydn Ott is big, strong, fast and has great vision. Very talented. Cal played very good defense in game one.

*****THAT'S ALL*****
