Jonestown, Nazi Germany, religion, Q-Anon, Charles Manson, etc.
you have a group of people that think that global warming is real and you have another group that thinks it is a lie being used for nefarious reasons. you have the majority of Russian citizens that think their countries invasion of Ukraine is a fight against Nazis.
I know multiple college educated people that have come to believe some or all of the following:
911 was an inside job
the moon landing was a hoax
Damar Hamlin is dead
The government is controlling the minds of people with chemtrails
There is a powerful group of people that are running a world wide pedophilia ring
Trump was going to be reinstated to the office of president (on multiple occasions) after he was defeated
I even know a few people who believe:
Obama was a Muslim plant being used to bring down the USA
The earth is flat
Joe Biden is dead and when you "see" him you are actually witnessing a hologram of him
You can look back and see how ridiculous it was that all of the German's problems were due to the Jews trying to bring them down or that Jim Jones wasn't actually a messiah but people continue to believe outlandish things and once they believe them, you can't convince them that they aren't real. One of my top employees fell into this trap and when I sat him down to tell him that I was worried about his mental health, he quit.
You have a sect of Muslims that believe if they kill infidels that they will be rewarded in heaven with 72 virgins so they are willing to fly planes into buildings in order to get their reward. You have a large group of people in this country that believes everything is due to racism in spite of the fact that we elected a black president just a few years ago.
I have to believe that much of this disinformation is being propagated by foreign countries in order to create divisions in America. Imagine how Russia will benefit if they can convince enough Americans that Ukraine is the real problem (some of these people that I know are convinced that Ukraine is the center of the world-wide pedophile ring).
One of my biggest issues with Trump is that he is a narcissist. If you tell him you like him, then he likes you. If you have an issue with anything that he says, he doesn't like you. Putin was brought up in the KGB and knows how to gauge people. After his first meeting with Putin, Trump had a press conference where he was asked if he believed Putin or if he believed the federal agencies that said Russia was meddling in the election and he sided with Putin. When he lost to Biden, he couldn't accept it and he said the election was rigged. People being people, many of his supporters believed that the election was rigged and have lost faith in the institutions of this country. It just goes to show you how important leadership is. Hitler had them gassing Jews, Jones had them drinking Kook-Aid, Manson had them killing innocent people, and Trump has them losing faith in what has always been the shining light in the world.
