Good morning.

Auburn is forcing the issue a bit in its search for a wing. Bruce Pearl and his staff brought in 6-foot-7 wing Chad Baker-Mazara for an official visit Tuesday and Wednesday. He signed with Duquesne initially, transferred to San Diego State for a year and then spent last season at Northwest Florida C.C.

He played a lot at NWF. Here are his numbers:

2FG: 50.2% (99-of-197)
3FG: 46.9% (67-of-143)
FT: 83.5% (86-of-103)

He's a score-first guy with rebounding and defense falling behind that.

Why this whirlwind dalliance with Baker-Mazara? Auburn either became weary of waiting on former Vanderbilt wing Ty Lawrence or became weary that he was playing them. Either way, Auburn wanted to accelerate things in its search for a No. 1 wing for the 2023-24 season.

Would Auburn take Lawrence at this point? It would indeed.

With that said, I see no reason to believe that Lawrence feels even the slightest bit of pressure to make a decision soon. He's actually planning to hold his own pro day and then he'll start whittling down his choices. Auburn doesn't want to wait that long. To be fair, Lawrence OVd here three weeks ago.

There's another angle to this as well. Some kids can look at the Tigers' 1-2-3 hierarchy, which currently includes Aden Holloway and Tre Donaldson and Denver Jones and KD Johnson and (potentially) Chaney Johnson and even Lior Berman, and think things are too crowded. We know that's not the case because Auburn still needs a bona fide WING to play 28-33 minutes per game. I'm just saying that some people like to have their spot so clearly guaranteed that even an ignoramus from Coeur D'Alene could figure it out.

So that's where it stands. I'm told Texas A&M is the Tigers' biggest obstacle here for Baker-Mazara's commitment. Draw your own conclusions there.

He's expected to make a decision within a couple days.
