The USS Liberty was an American navy ship that was attacked by Israeli planes and torpedo boats on June 8, 1967. 34 American sailors were killed 172 were injured.
Israel claims that the assault was accidental, but survivors say that their ship was clearly marked when it was attacked. High level U.S. officials have also stated that the assault was intentional, including Dean Rusk, the Secretary of State at the time.
In 2004, San Diego attorney and retired Navy Captain Ward Boston, Jr. declared in a signed affidavit that President Johnson had ordered officials to conclude that the attack was a case of "mistaken identity" despite "overwhelming evidence to the contrary."
