We've had 3 dogs and they all died around 12-13 years old.

We've had 4 cats and 3 of them died around 14 years old.

But Lucky was really lucky.

Our daughter and her future husband heard him crying in between the walls of a barn where they were visiting on the way home from Auburn. They got permission to tear away part of the wall and saved him when he was a kitten so small he could fit in the palm of your hand.

We ended up with Lucky and this morning, after 20 years of him laying in my lap and waking me up by tickling my face with his whiskers, we had to end his life because of failing health.

I held out for several weeks but the time had come and even I could tell there was no saving him..

My wife took him to the vet to put him to sleep because I didn't want to cry like a baby in front of strangers.

Instead I cried like a baby (alone) while I was digging his grave right next to the graves of our other cats.

His body was still warm when my wife brought him home and I momentarily fantasized that he was still alive.

I cried like a baby when I buried him.

But how many pets do you ever have that span 20 years of your life ?

I know we did the right thing but the hole in my heart is so big I don't know if I will get over it any time soon.

Thanks for letting me go on, I needed the distraction.
