Tom Osborne was an offensive dork (like Gus) who was the OC for a lesser HC who won a National Title because of him (like Gus), who then was made HC at that school and kept going to the big game (like Gus) and getting beat by better teams (like Gus) and it wasn't until he started getting dirty in recruiting / had an amazing Defense (that he had nothing to do with) that he started winning National Titles.
