Does anyone have any experience with patents? I have something I am going to make a template for this month and then have it fabricated out of aluminum locally to see if it hold up this summer on the boat.

How important is a patent prior to doing this type of thing with something you intend on potentially producing one day? Would a local fabricator(very small aluminum shop) be likely to do something with my product if I just ask them to make one for me?

I've been told patents are exceptionally difficult to obtain and either way someone can likely steal my product design anyway.

Anyone have any experience designing, testing, starting a company, and then marketing the product?
