According to this poll recently released by Monmouth.

Gary Johnson polling at 11% in early match-up poll with Hillary Clinton (42%) and Donald Trump (34%). If Gary gets to 15% in national polling, I believe he would qualify for the presidential debates. Having him on the stage with two of the most disliked presidential candidates in recent memory could have a pretty astounding effect. Out-performing what Perot did in 1992 (just under 19% of the popular vote) would be hard, but if ever a 3rd party candidate would gain traction, it might be this year.
And Gary Johnson isn't just some rich guy who is entertaining and people are amused by. If he was on a debate stage with Clinton and Trump, he would be easily the person on stage most qualified to hold the office of President of the United States (and it wouldn't really even be close). He was the successful governor of New Mexico. While there, he used his veto power more than the other 49 state governors combined, and utilized this to cut the NM budget in a big way, and give the state financial stability. He also focus on marijuana decriminalization and school vouchers. He was a fantastic governor and the only reason he didn't serve longer is because of term limits.
He also climbed Mt. Everest. And he was the CEO of a marijuana company up until January. And unlike Trump and Clinton, he didn't find success because of his name. He started a handyman business in college and grew it into a statewide construction company. I really think he would be a candidate with the story and ideas to intrigue many American voters.
