This is going to be a rambling mess for the most part so bear with me.
YIKES. Totally unacceptable.
I will start out by saying that for me personally, the secondary was the biggest question mark coming into the year, and they're going to be an issue moving forward. The Cal QB is borderline bad and he looked like Drew Brees out there yesterday. Shocker Keionte is not an outside corner. Who could've seen that coming? Credit to Durkin though, as bad as we were in first half that side came to play in the second. The first half made me miss the Steele defenses of old. The plan of rush 3 and sit back in a zone is 🤮. Once we started bringing some folks we pretty much shut them down. The DL looked very solid against the run overall. That was promising. I am not a fan of having McCleod and Crawford moving all over the place in coverage. They are pass rushers who cause havoc. Let them do what they do best.
The offense......what did I just watch. I haven't seen a monstrosity like that since, well I guess since last year. What the hell kind of game plan was that? Did we think Cal was Alabama A&M? Were we trying to impress Deuce by throwing it around? I mean certainly Hugh didn't think our best chance to win was dropping back 70% of the time and letting Thorne launch the ball downfield every play. Where was the quick stuff? The easy completions? WHERE DID THE RUN GAME GO? Play calling and the game plan were indefensible.
What the hell happened to the offensive line? This unit was supposed to be the strength of the team. Pass pro was real bad. I have not gone back and watched it so I can't single anyone out yet, but we might need some shuffling.
That brings us to our grand finale. Thorne. Get this guy to the bench as quickly as possible. As bad as the game plan and OL were, he was much worse. How much more evidence do we need to see that he is not the guy. What does he do well? He is supposed to be the safe option who runs the offense and doesn't make mistakes. That's working well. This season is not going to be what we hoped, so why waste another season trotting him out there? He can't see pressure, He can't process nearly fast enough, he doesn't have a big arm, he isn't accurate, he can't really create on his own. What does he do well?? He is damn lucky he didn't have 6 picks last night instead of 4. As Chandler Wooten said, as long as 1 is out there we are unserious as a team. We need to see Hank. It just needs to happen.
Hugh is lucky that he is recruiting the way that he is, if not this could get tenuous. Yesterday was a season trajectory altering loss. We are once again staring 6-6 in the face. It is just not good enough. The situation he took over was clearly a disaster, but the roster has almost been entirely flipped. Our high end talent is very young but this cannot keep happening. He will not contiue to get a free pass. We are a much more talented team than Cal and go embarrassed at home. We will be a bottom tier team in the conference this year again in a year we were supposed to jump to middle of the road. Yesterday was a disaster, no way around it.
