TLDR: I’m a nerd that wants to learn new things

Hello all, everyday of my non online life I try to learn a new fact everyday, they usually are history or related to anthropology but I thought maybe some of you all have some interesting cool tidbits or facts to share everyday and maybe we can all learn new things.

Fun fact of the day 2/13/22
During the ottoman occupation of formerly Eastern Roman land, the often, as we would consider them “Greeks” or “Hellenes” referred to there disparate communities as “Romioi” the Greek word for Roman’s, there is a story you can read in certain books about the development of the modern Greek state, that the Greek army went to some Aegean islands that had not yet been occupied after the end of WW1 and the Greek soldiers went to the the center of the town square, and said that they were all Greeks now, a group of small children went up to the men and said, “what do you mean Greeks?” The soldier obviously confused said, “what do you mean are you not Hellenes?” To which the child responded “no we are not Hellenes, we are romioi” this encounter to a certain extent shows us how fickle our conceptions of culture are and how hard it is for some groups of people to let go of very important cultural aspects about themselves or there way of life.
