Auburn was coming off an 8-3-1 season in 1990. Though our four win streak against Bama came to an end in a pretty big upset and we lost to a good Southern Miss team, we still had our moments while breaking in freshman Stan White at QB. The Florida State game comes to mind, and tying a really good Tennessee team was also nothing to be ashamed of. Overall, it was a solid, if somewhat inexperienced team that showed promise and a lot of upside for the future.
What went wrong after this, aside from the Eric Ramsey thing? I know it had to be a distraction, but how big was it, exactly? We started 3-0 in 1991 and then the night before the Tennessee game (September 27, 1991), the Eric Ramsey scandal drops, supposedly courtesy of the REC. Auburn drops the Tennessee game 30-21, loses 10-9 against Southern Miss the very next week, and never recovered for the duration of Dye’s tenure.
I can’t really see this collapse from a “talent” standpoint. Auburn had good players on the 1991-1992 rosters.
Were there any other variables at play during this whole time, aside from the Ramsey scandal and perhaps Dye’s health? Did Tommy Bowden make things worse?
