oh, my goodness. I knew it was a whack-job cult; I knew about how David Miscavige turned it up a notch from L. Ron, and how they bought up Clearwater.
This is another great HBO documentary. Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief is both great film and journalism. A couple of things stand out, but without giving spoilers, I'll say this:
Travolta's and Cruise's seductions and subsequent manipulations were both similar and different. One is a prisoner, one is the equivalent of Paul.
The film is credible if for no other reason that so many of Hubbard's -- and more importantly -- later, Miscavige's former goons go on-camera and recant.
The cult dodged a bullet when it blackmailed the IRS into c(3) status. This film could be a death blow.
