That loss last weekend was pretty frustrating and could have had a hangover effect today against a quality team away from home. IU is already 2-0 in the BIG and coming off a road win at Michigan this week so they absolutely could have drilled us if we showed up dragging which was evidenced by how the jumped on us so quickly out of the gate. To go down 12 early and still manage to put up this kind of dominant performance is one of the more impressive in-game shifts I can recall. It speaks volumes about the talent on this roster that we could have our best offensive game of the year with Broome being held to only 2 points in his first game not in double figures. Putting up triple digits on a blue blood like IU is truly a great day.
Aden came out of the gates early playing great this season against Baylor, but really struggled shooting the ball the last 4 games going 4/20 from deep. On a big stage away from home, he bounced back leading us in scoring with 24 and almost just as importantly, had no turnovers. To reach our ceiling this year, we need Aden to become a consistently good to great guard. Today was a huge step in the right direction.
KD with one of his best games of his Auburn career today. He did so many things well with several hustle plays that were big factors in why we buried IU. When he is on, he's such an X factor. Hopefully, Bruce can use this performance to challenge him to harness his energy to deliver this type of high-intensity, low-mistake, effort on a more consistent basis. We are going to be extremely hard to beat on days when KD is playing with the right balance of controlled aggression.
Jaylin also had one of his best games during his Auburn career today. He made huge contributions in every phase tying for the lead in scoring at 24 and also led us in assists with 7. Today, he looked like Grant Williams from Tennessee scoring at all levels and distributing the ball effectively. We have seen Jaylin with great games and then go back to not being a huge factor many times in the past. @MattAU05 and I often lament how frustrating it is to watch a guy with all the tools not be able to put together great games with any regularity. Hopefully today was the spark he needed to assert himself like this every game. Maybe KD could share some of his aggression.
What a difference a win like this makes. I was still pissed about the loss at App State today before this one tipped off. That was a tough game on the road, but one that was extremely winnable given the talent on our roster. Beat USC at home and this will still be a very strong OOC season that sets us up for a top 4 seed in March with a good finish in the SEC. This may sound like a stretch, but I think this team has the highest ceiling of any Bruce has coached because we can be elite on both ends of the floor. We don't have 2 NBA starters like we did with Bari and Walker, but we have 3 guards who are each capable of being very good college players this year and as a group, they should be our best backcourt since Jared and Bryce. Pair that with a potential All-American center and numerous other guys who are all capable of putting up big games at the 3-4 and this team has the potential to be great if it continues to develop.
