As far as actually holding hearings on Merrick Garland, nearly seven-in-10 Americans—69 percent to 25 percent—said the Senate should do so. Even a majority of Republicans—56 percent to 39 percent—said that the Senate should hold hearings on the matter.
Asked whether they thought Senate Republicans' refusal to hold hearings reflected a desire to give the American people more of a voice in the decision or because they are playing politics, a whopping 77 percent responded for the latter, with just 16 percent responding for the former. More than six-in-10 Republicans—62 percent to 28 percent—said the refusal represents a political move rather than one that would give the American people more agency.
