I am not a recruiting expert but a few things are obvious:
1. Every top ranked DT is highly coveted by all schools.
2. Auburn is smack in the middle of SEC country and is surrounded by state named schools that will always have an edge on us for the hearts of these recruits.
3. Since DTs are so few and hard to come by every school goes all out in recruiting.
4. We are often their #2 choice but that does not help us at all.
Creative Plan:
1. It is mainly the 4 and 5 star recruits we are missing on.
2. Continue to recruit the 4 and 5 star DTs but do not put all of our eggs in that basket.
3. Take several 3 star DTs EARLY (not later after we have insulted them by ignoring them for higher ranked players) and know that with weight training and coaching they can hold their own against any SEC caliber O line. (See louisville, tcu, baylor, mich st. etc)
4. Go outside of our main geographical area for these guys where the SEC is not as visible. (Indiana, Illinois,
Maryland, WV, New England, NY, etc. )
5. Appeal to them that playing in the SEC is the best and where the best competes at the highest levels.
6. Take an overload of true DTs (5 or 6) till we are caught up with our depth
Seems our plan in the past (till this year) was to go after the big fish and then when that failed then go back to the 3 stars that we have ignored and try to get back in. Right now I would feel better about Auburn if they had 6 solid 3 star DTs that were all competing for a starting spot than I do with our 1 5 star recruit, 1 4 star recruit, and a group of others that would have hard time starting for northern ill.
With a solid group of DTs you could have a real competition at that position each and every practice so the starters are physically and mentally ready for Saturday. Right now there is no way a true competition is going on with our lack of depth and talent. Plus an injury would not kill you.
