You see a lot of posters saying this is simply what we are. We can't compete with the insane talent that bama and uga are pulling. But, we have not seen what our program can do with a true top tier recruiter as our head coach. Chiz was supposed to be an elite recruiter, but he was Chiz so you know. Too busy touring his book rather than fully cashing in his early success with recruiting.
Gus has not done a bad job recruiting... for Gus. He's hired a lot of good recruiters as assistants, and with the exception of the tragedy that is this class his classes are top 15, usually top 10. Point is, Gus Malzahn is able to get top 10 classes with us. This very uncharismatic man who is not a natural recruiter is able to pull a top 10 class here.
So what could a guy like Mario Cristobal or Billy Napier do here? Could they get us a top 5 class? I think so.
It's worth pointing out the Georgia was in somewhat a similar situation with Richt. Except Richt was better than Gus, but not by a lot. They hired Smart, who is not an elite coach, or gameplanner. But he is an elite recruiter. And while they still can't beat bama their program has clearly been elevated by his recruiting.
