i’m an auburn fan to the end and i’m thankful for the road that led me to being a proud barner, but it’s really frustrating to know auburn never will amount to much of anything in sport.
it’s increasingly apparent as schools race past auburn in investment in the big 3 sports, with traditional powers doing what they can to stay ahead of the pack. auburn once was a powerhouse swimming school and had every reason to stay on top of the sport but instead let it crumble because reasons. equestrian is one of the few things we can hang out cowboy hats on but even that is falling apart now. i guess maybe bass fishing?
football might be competitive with freeze, but it sure won’t be because they are playing on a remotely level playing field with nil. baseball and basketball are the same way, just with no discernible tradition to support rather good coaches.
auburn can’t even cobble together $25MM for its football stadium while other schools are putting nine digits in modernizing baseball fields and creating world class facilities. meanwhile, auburn is taking coach class via greyhound to games because it can’t afford plane tickets.
the most difficult thing is having to live vicariously through other teams to beat our rivals because our teams can’t do it themselves. we aren’t even competitive for upper level 5* players in football, and basketball has obviously became more difficult for bruce to navigate. butch does the best he can but still doesn’t have much to work with. softball had an elite top 2 coach and then scandal. wbb never has been.
while i’d love for auburn to become a power in somethingcand maintain relevance, we are coming off the heels of one of the worst hire in the history of sport in our biggest platform. that even being allowed to happen shows how much auburn’s administration cares. the answer to that is depressing and revealing.
regardless, i’m still a proud barner, even if that means knowing we will be mediocre in everything and that’s just who we are. i’ve always thought being an auburn fan means you have to hate yourself on some level. maybe every level. it takes a lot of will to consciously choose to barn hard. thankfully there are dozens of us to help cope.
