Because of what it says inside. No one tried to steal this, it was abandoned in a hotel room, just like Hunter abandoned his laptop. The finders contacted Veritas, but Veritas never published a single word or excerpt from the diary. Veritas was never charged with anything.
There are only a couple of reasons why the SS and DOJ went into over-drive when the diary was discovered, and both reasons are what Ashley wrote in her diary.
