Harsin is here.
He is introducing the three team captains.
”All three guys are deserving of being in this position.”
They will have one honorary captain per week.
FIRST UP: OWEN PAPPOE, LB
”This means the world to me. I’m really excited about it.”
On what he learned from last year: “People are going to look at me for answers. I can’t show up and have a bad day. I can’t slack; if they see me slacking, then they’ll start slacking.”
On his career here: “The biggest thing is just staying strong mentally.“
On what he learned while injured last season: “Just becoming a coach on the field, understanding offensive concepts and things like that.”
”I know the defense like the back of my hand; everything is running smooth.”
On what he learned from KJ and Chandler Wooten in years past: ”Just showing up and being consistent every day, pushing everybody around you. I’m actually a quiet guy, but my coaches and teammates have challenged me.”
On being eager to play: “I’m excited to get back. It’s time to work.”
On Asante: “He’s just about as fast as me. He plays with a lot of energy.”
NEXT UP: DERICK HALL, DE
”It’s a big role and a big responsibility to lead this team.”
On his role models: “Plenty of guys. KJ, Chandler Wooten, Marlon Davidson, Derrick Brown. I just took (what they showed him) and ran with it.”
On his development: “If you’re not taking that next step, you’re going backward. I don’t really have that many personal goals. I’m just trying to help this program take the next step and get Auburn back to where it’s supposed to be.”
On if it’s important for him to be a captain: “It was always a thought. The ball wasn’t in my court. It was about coming in every day and proving myself.”
On other sources of leadership: (He names a bunch of dudes on defense.)
On this defense: “It’s night and day. When we came into camp, we had a lot of kinks to work out. We’ve come a long way. We’re still taking strides in the right direction.”
On Dylan Brooks and the younger guys. “When Dylan came in, he gravitated to me naturally. He asks me a lot of things on the field. It’s only pushing me further making this team better.”
NEXT UP: JOHN SAMUEL SHENKER
”What an honor this is. It’s an awesome feeling we can’t take for granted.”
On not going to Omaha: “That was tough. It was fun to watch!”
“Any kid would want to be a captain on a team like this.” (Talks about looking up to Chandler Cox. “He was driving force for me.”)
On coming back: Says he came back for Auburn and made that decision on the field after the Houston game. “The main reason we came back was to play for Coach Harsin.”
On Landen King: “He’s better off where he is.“ (JSS says he misses him being with the TEs, though.)
On what he wants to improve: Mentions footwork, having to be perfect against Hall and Pappoe.
On the offense: “We’re light years from where we were in the spring.”
On getting into game-prep mode: “It’s huge because then you’re not worried about every install.”
On Malcolm Johnson: “He really put in the work. That’s something you can‘t take lightly.“ (Also mentions Shed as Malcolm’s role model.)
