We talk often about how good Cam Newton was in 2010. He won the Heisman Trophy for his efforts, so, yeah, identifying him as a good player isn't exactly breaking news.

I always think of Cam as a tank of a runner, a sure thing on 3rd-and-3 with a QB Power, but he also was a remarkably effective passer. In a category where two-tenths of a yard is a big deal, Newton owns the Season Yards Per Attempt list with a 10.193 average. The next best is Jason Campbell with a 8.546 followed by Nick Marshall at 8.474.

What does that mean? Cam Newton was the best big-yardage passer in school history, largely because he had great touch on long balls and he played for a coordinator who was dedicated philosophically to taking shots down the field. Yet another way to appreciate Big No. 2.

ON THIS DATE: Auburn is 4-0 in games played on Sept. 4, which includes victories over Virginia '97, Appalachian State '99, Louisiana-Monroe '04 and Arkansas State '10.

That App State game was crazy. Auburn was supposed to be playing Florida State in that spot, but Tuberville (joined by everyone on this side of the rivalry) asked out of that agreement and instead brought in the Mountaineers. Easy win, right?

With the game tied in the fourth quarter, quarterback Ben Learn mishandled at snap deep in Auburn territory. A mad scramble ensued, but Travaris Robinson was able to extricate the ball from the scrum. At the AU 4. It was that close. Disaster averted.

Leard hit Ronney Daniels for a go-ahead touchdown with less than a minute remaining. Larry Casher intercepted the Hail Mary in the endzone as time expired to seal the victory. A difficult, debut victory for Tuberville.

Lots of birthdays today!

Happy Birthday to former quarterback and assistant coach Vince Dooley, who went on to greater fame at some other school a little east of here. He got that job because he was good, of course, but also because he had a very good relationship with Joel Eaves, an Auburn grad who played several sports at Auburn (including football) and later served on Shug Jordan's staff and coached the Tigers' basketball team for 14 seasons. Even today, Dooley marvels at the faith Eaves showed in him to be able to handle the UGA job at the age of 31.

(SIDEBAR: Joel Eaves, man. Talk about cementing a legacy. Did a lot of really good work.)

Happy Birthday as well to noted cut-up Bart Eddins (28), former offensive lineman and current HS coach Jared Cooper (27) and former fullback Jake Slaughter, who turns 33 today.
