In 1963 Auburn finished the regular season ranked #5 with all the key players coming back for the 1964 season. They were preseason picked my many to win the national championship; consequently, the Auburn fans couldn't wait for the season to begin. I was there for that first game against Houston. We won 30-0 but at a great price. Jimmy Sidle, Auburn's great QB who had just been featured on the cover page of Sports Illustrated, tore his rotator cuff of his throwing arm. This injury made Sidle one dimensional, Shug ended up playing him at running back, but the bottom line was we lost our QB which caused us to lose our offense. Auburn went on to lose 4 games that season including a heart breaker to Alabama 21-14 and they never scored more than 14 points in any game with the exception of Chattanooga . Unlike our present team, the '64 team had a fine defense but still this wasn't enough to overcome an inept offense. Our team is at least this fragile imo. If Gus doesn't get the QB issues handled quickly, I fear the 6-4 record of the '64 team will begin to look pretty good for this squad.
