Whew, what a bad day.
Took a call yesterday afternoon from "Coinbase support", suggesting my account had been compromised. I had gmail alert acitivity that backed up the potenital email compromise so I went with it.
The initial support caller did not ask me for any pertitnent details; however, I asked to escalate to a manager. "Manager" called back moments later and suggested that the account was not secure and stepped me through a series of email correspondence that made me believe I needed to transfer my currency to a Coinbase wallet (decentralized) and with all the correspondence I was receiveing it felt like a trusted situation. I was wrong.
I opened a Coinbase wallet, initially transferred about $4,000 of an ALT coin over, examined the transaction reciept, everything checked out. Then they ask what other coins to move and I transferred some bitcoin as well. It was taking sometime to see that show up, "support" was on the phone with me - 15 minutes or so...... then the call was dropped.
A quick review of new wallet activity that should have approximately $90,000 in it now had transactions in and out. Balance zero.
Yep. Sure felt like an idiot and after a I called coinbase support independentlyI realized I was the victim of a phising scam.
Really can't describe what it feels like to have that amount of money evaporate like that and I feel so unbelievably stupid for even thinking that was an ok process. The theives were clever, crafty, feels like nightmare - me waiting to wake up still.
While it's a significant amount of money to lose the worst part is there's just no recourse. Coinbase support says to contact my local authorities and Coinbase will support any investigation but that seems absolutely fruitless.
