Auburn coach Butch Thompson is speaking with the media Thursday morning to preview this weekend's series against Austin Peay. Here'a a summary...
** Last non-conference weekend series. Austin Peay is one of the hottest teams in US. Already has some SEC wins. We'll see more left-handed hitters. They take advantage of what you give them on offense, have 20 home runs and can steal bases. First two starters are impressive, one is a lower-slot lefty. This will help us get ready for competing in our league.
** Trying to build Joseph Gonzalez up. He will pitch today in practice. Still needs to work on things, His stride was 6 inches shorter. Will not pitch this weekend. Trying to get his lower half working better. He'll throw to hitters Monday. Will evaluate him Monday night and determine plan for next week. He's healthy.
** Carson Myers will move up to Saturday and go TBA Sunday. Christian Herberholz is a candidate to start Sunday.
** Feels good about bullpen. Need to get Zach Crotchfelt back out there and other players to get sharper. Spending a lot of time to keep them encouraged and giving them work.
** Like this team but more will be required. We can do more in our at-bats. Leaving a lot of guys on base. Still waiting for another component of offense to show up. Want us to continue to push forward. Yesterday, there were about 12 instances of two strikes and we couldn't make a pitch. We're close, just got to execute better. Will Cannon needs to pitch more and get sharper.
** Our defense has really improved through the last couple of weeks.
** Deric Fabian has taken the reins and is doing it on offense and defense. Javon Hernandez was out with an illness yesterday. Gavin Miller did a nice job yesterday. Got an RBI and played well at 3B.
