I always enjoy these threads - I'm not starting this thread to come off as an expert but rather to give an opportunity to break down the INTs. I'm not a football coach, which will probably become evident below...

The one thing I've noticed in both plays is that JJ fails to see the LB and the play doesn't turn out as he anticipated. Maybe that's an easy fix, maybe not. Anyways, here goes.

Pick 1 2nd Quarter, 2nd and 7, Play 4 in Drive (6:20 in vid below): I'll be honest...this one scares me for several reasons. It's 2nd and 7 on the JSU 49yd line. I've watched this a ton. Basically, I think what happens here is JJ fails to see the LB covering underneath after anticipating that the LB would cover Kamryn Pettway in man-to-man.

Screen 1 - JJ looks to Melvin Ray (outside receiver) and Kamryn Pettway after seeing Duke route initially covered. It looks like D is running zone based on positioning. KP is covered by an LB. MR doesn't really appear open at this point and it looks to be a hitch or hitch n' go.

Screen 2 - JJ sets his feet and his shoulder is pointed right at MR (drew a line) who is running what appears to be a hitch. The CB "bites" on the hitch, eventually putting his body in front of MR, which opens up the hitch n' go. Look at the LB covering Pettway - I think JJ confused this for man-to-man at this point and anticipated the LB going down the field w/ Pettway, NOT staying home.

Screen 3 - JJ winds up, with the CB having stepped in front of MR after seeing JJ set his feet. At this point, I think the defense is baiting JJ to throw to MR - the CB steps in front of MR to entice JJ to throw downfield since the go route could appear open. However, the LB stays in the flat to cut off JJ's throw, and I'm guessing JJ didn't see him as he was anticipating that the LB would cover KP in man-to-man. Notice the pocket - lots of time for JJ. Notice Roc Thomas releasing below - very important.

Screen 4 - You can see MR starting his run downfield. This is going to be a tough throw for JJ. His shoulders are angled downfield. He doesn't see the LB that's cutting off the angle that JJ wants to make the throw. Roc is wide-ass open too. If JJ had waited a half second, we would have a first down.

Screen 5 - JJ throws low, not sure why, and I'm not sure MR would have caught it anyways, but the LB breaks on the ball and makes an easy pick. Look at Roc - easy first down or convertible 3rd and short if JJ stays patient. WTF?!

Jacksonville State 4th Qtr, 2nd and 11, Play 2 in Drive (11:14 in vid below): I think this play has some common elements as the first pick in that JJ fails to see the LB underneath. This is an interesting play, though, because I think it explains why we run those stupid screens to Ricardo that never get much yardage.

Screen 1 - Duke is lined up at bottom of screen, Ricardo Louis at H-Back. A CB walks up to the LOS right before the ball is hiked. The key to this play is the LB at the top right at the top of the AU logo.

Screen 2
- RL runs towards the sidelines, feigning a short pass and covered by a CB. I think the purpose of this play is to draw the LB I mentioned before in a man-to-man match-up with RL, who is lined up as H-back, and to run to cover him (leaving middle open) OR, if LB is spying, to hopefully bite hard and think play is going towards sidelines. Either way, this leaves the field wide open for Duke, who will run a slant. The CB picks up RL instead of the LB, leaving the LB as a spy to patrol the field. RL does a poor job feigning the play and JJ doesn't even attempt to fake a throw. Actually, JJ hasn't even taken his eyes off Duke since the ball was hiked. While the LB takes an initial step towards the sidelines, he sees JJ honing in on Duke and stays in the middle of the field.

Screen 3 - JJ throws to Duke, who has beaten his man. Since he hasn't taken his eyes off Duke, he probably doesn't see the LB smack dab in the middle of the field. The LB stays home and makes an easy pick. If JJ sees the LB, the pass is doable, but needs to be lobbed over the LB and let Duke go get it. You don't throw a bullet pass. Easy pick for the defense.

Anyways, I want to hear you all break it down since there are a lot more educated posters out there with more knowledge about football than I, so I would like to hear your thoughts.
